Christmas has come early for Mayor Thomas Menino.

Menino, who turns
70 later this week, was released from Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital
this morning after spending nearly two months in two different medical
facilities.

“He’s doing great,” said John Guilfoil, a spokesman for Menino. “The mayor is happy to be home for the holidays.”

Menino
was admitted to Brigham and Women’s Hospital on Oct. 26 after returning
from a vacation with his wife in Italy. Doctors said he had a blood
clot and a virus. During his stay at the hospital, he also suffered a
compression fracture in his vertebrae. Doctors also diagnosed him with
Type 2 diabetes.

On Nov. 26 he was transferred to Spaulding and has spent nearly the past four weeks on rehabilitation work.

Menino’s
aides have said they’ve been in constant contact with the mayor who was
still engaged in running the city during his hospitalization.

However,
his most recent extended hospital stay, along with his age and the fact
that he is already Boston’s longest serving mayor has started raising
some questions as to whether he will run for reelection in 2013.

Guilfoil said he wasn’t sure when Menino would return to City Hall.

“Right now we’re just focused on letting him enjoy his holiday,” he said.
