MTA reportedly considering adding platform doors on L train

Sliding doors on subway platforms – to help protect riders from falling on the tracks – might not be such a pipe dream.

New York City commuters may start hearing the “stand clear of the closing door” announcement more frequently as the New York Post reported that the MTA is considering adding sliding doors on the platforms at L train stations.

Thomas Prendergast, the MTA’s acting executive director, said the L train line would be a good place to test the sliding doors because it doesn’t share track with other lines and is used by only one type of train.

He told the Post it would likely be implemented in one station and if it proves successful expand to other stations on the L line.

Adding sliding doors to the entire MTA system would cost more than $1 billion. Prendergast told the Post it is possible the MTA could receive funding from private companies.

To increase safety, the MTA is also planning an “aggressive passenger information campaign” to warn passengers to stay away from the edge of the platform.

According to the Post, the MTA is also considering expanding the “see something, say something” campaign to ask riders to look out for the mentally ill.

In December two passengers died after being shoved onto the tracks. Both suspects of these two incidents, Naeem Davis and Erika Menendez, have a history of mental-health issues, according the Post.
