A Winthrop, Mass. man has been sentenced to five years in prison after his eighth conviction on drunk driving charges.

Joseph F. Limone was found guilty Feb 15. of operating under the influence as a fifth or subsequent offense, assault with a dangerous weapon, and malicious destruction of property.

The Suffolk District Attorney’s office says Limone was pulled over by State Police in Revere on July 12, 2011.

“He was driving erratically, honking his horn and screaming at another motorist, and ultimately drove the wrong way down a one-way street,” a press statement reads. “He failed every field sobriety test put to him, kicked out the right rear window of a cruiser when placed under arrest, and tried to attack a trooper with a bench only to find that it was chained to a wall.”

Suffolk Superior Court Judge Raymond Brassard sentenced Limone to five years behind bars for the OUI and 15 years probation for the assault. While on probation, Limone must comply with a series of court orders, including not operating “any vehicle with an engine,” and random urine tests to prove he’s not drinking. Any violations could send him back to prison for another five years.

Prosecutors say Limone’s bad driving record goes back to the 1970s, with OUI convictions in Essex, Suffolk, and Middlesex counties. His license was revoked for life in 1997.

“It was clear to us from a review of his driving record that nothing short of incarceration was going to keep this man from drinking and driving,” Suffolk DA Dan Conley said. “He’s shown a complete disregard for the court’s orders and the revocation of his license.”
