UPDATE: Cops say the deceased, 79-year-old James Jackson, was found by his wife Diana Gayles, 69, at 1:00 a.m. when she noticed he hadn’t come to bed yet.

Gayles is legally blind and hard of hearing, according to reports from the NYPD.

She made her way to the couch in the living room where Jackson normally sat, police said, and tried to wake him up. She felt a wet spot on the couch that she thought might have been spilled soda.

When she couldn’t wake him, she called a neighbor. The neighbor arrived and immediately saw Jackson was bleeding. Gayles then called 911.

He was pronounced dead at the hospital at 3:09 a.m.

Detectives said a neighbor heard a loud bang on her door at approximately 11:00 p.m., and another heard one gunshot at approximately 10:30 or 11:00 p.m. Police reported that neither neighbor saw anything.

Jackson had a criminal record, but the last incident was in 1996.

Metro’s original story is below.

At 2:24 a.m. on Sunday, police received a 911 call reporting an unconscious man at 1091 Gates Avenue in Brooklyn.

Cops arrived to find a 72-year-old black man who had apparently been shot in the neck.

The man was pronounced dead at Woodhull Hospital.

No arrests have been made. An investigation is underway.

The NYPD has not released the man’s identity; his family has yet to be notified.
