Downtown Crossing pushcart supporters get 1,000 signatures, plan to meet with Menino
Opponents of the Boston Improvement District’s plan to push pushcart vendors out of Downtown Crossing said today they collected over 1,000 signatures in support of their cause, and that their next step is to meet with Mayor Thomas M. Menino to try and keep the vendors in the shopping district.
Petitioner Rob Grover said it doesn’t make sense that BID would want to oust the pushcart vendors from the district when their licenses expire at the end of the month.
“I’ve been scratching my head about it, and I’m riding the wave of loyalty that so many people have to the city and its vendors,” Grover said.
He started the petition on Change.org on Sunday night, following news that BID planned to revamp the pushcart vendor program in Downtown Crossing.
Menino has expressed his disapproval of the plan, both to local media outlets and through Twitter, which has Grover and his fellow supporters hopeful that they can create a plan to keep the vendors in place, or at least expand their licenses by 60 days until things “get sorted out.”
“It’s really about them and their businesses and livelihood,” he said.
