Newly exonerated David Ranta suffers heart attack

After only a day of freedom, David Ranta suffered a serious heart attack Friday night and remains hospitalized, awaiting surgery, according to the New York Times.

Ranta was exonerated last week, after serving 23 years in prison for the murder of a Hasidic rabbi in 1991.

The Brooklyn District Attorney’s Conviction Integrity Unit found that the evidence against Ranta “had been eroded,” according to Brooklyn DA Charles Hynes.

When he was released on Thursday, Ranta told reporters he was overwhelmed.

“Right now, I feel like I’m under water, swimming,” Ranta said.

When Ranta first experienced pain in his shoulders and back Friday night, and complained of being very hot, his family assumed he was having a panic attack.

They apparently quickly realized the pain was serious and took him to a hospital, where doctors discovered the cause of the pain: one artery was completely blocked, and another halfway closed. They reportedly put in a stent, and Ranta’s lawyer, Pierre Sussman, said further surgical procedures will be required.

“The toll that his years in prison have taken on David is great,” Sussman said.

Ranta reportedly takes medication for blood pressure but did not have a history of heart trouble in prison.
