Rain, snow, sleet or hail: Rowers keep on rowing

As the white of winter lingered into the new spring season, University of Pennsylvania crew team members found themselves rowing through snowflakes along the Schuylkill River yesterday.

“I’ve never actually rowed in snow until this year, and this year it’s happened about seven times,” said rower Mitch Stein, 22, a senior finance and accounting major.

Between two and three inches fluttered across the Philadelphia area yesterday, extending the winter season for at least one more day to the dismay of several summer sports teams.

“This morning was the worst. When we would stop to turn around, I would have accumulated snow on my body,” said Stein, who tends to sit in the back of the boat.

Most wore jackets, but rowers don’t usually wear gloves. Some believe it shows weakness.

“It wasn’t that bad,” Stein said. He was just happy there wasn’t much wind.

The worst part was docking, he said. “There was about two inches of snow on the docks, so getting the boat out and back in—that’s when my feet just froze.”
