A New Jersey state trooper and a Good Samaritan on Friday rescued three people from a car that was flipped upside down and trapped underwater in an Absecon pond, according to police.

Investigators said trooper Jamie Ablett was on his way home after working the day shift at the Atlantic City Marine Station.

As Ablett drove his patrol car on Route 30 about 5:10 p.m., he saw a car upside down and submerged in a retention pond across from the Absecon Home Depot. Police said only the rear tires of the vehicle were visible.

The driver of the car – later identified as 19-year-old Bryan Marticorena of Atlantic City – was outside and screaming for help, according to authorities.

After telling dispatch to call fire and EMS services, Ablett exited his car and jumped into the water.

Police said Good Samaritan Luis Roselli of Gibbsboro also dove into the pond.

The rescuers pulled two men – both clothed in full Marine camouflage uniforms – from the submerged car.

They have been identified as John Taylor, 19, and James Taylor, 22, both of Atlantic City.

A young woman, who police have named as 21-year-old Carmen Valdivieso, remained trapped inside the vehicle and couldn’t unlatch her seat belt to get out.

Police said Roselli used a knife given to him by responders to cut the belt and with Ablett pulled the woman from the car.

All three victims were taken to the Atlantic City Regional Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

The Absecon Police Department is investigating the cause of the crash.
