Roadblocks could delay public advertisement vote
City Council President Darrell Clarke doesn’t get it.
“This is the case of you all don’t want to do it because it’s not your idea,” said Clarke at yesterday’s Rules Committee meeting. The hearing discussed zoning changes to allow advertisements on municipal property.
“I don’t understand why everybody else in the United States of America can figure out a way to make money off advertisement in a tasteful way,” Clarke added, “and we can’t.”
Last-minute stipulations brought before the committee Thursday could delay some City Council members’ desires to add advertising on municipal buildings. Clarke said the ads could generate revenue for the cash-strapped city.
Bridget Collins-Greenwald, commissioner of public property, said there are a few issues that need to be addressed before offers can be accepted.
The issues are: Money raised from advertising cannot affect status of tax-exempt bonds; list of permissible sites for advertising; and Mayor Michael Nutter will have to sign off on the types of ads allowed.
