Forty-thousand runners in this year’s Broad Street Run on May 5 will sport a heart-shaped sticker that includes a special message: “From Philly to Boston with Love.”

“This year’s Broad Street Run is taking on an entirely new meaning,” said Mayor Michael Nutter, referring to the Boston bombings on April 15.

Nutter announced plans for the Independence Blue Cross Broad Street Run today, including increased security measures. The run is the largest 10-mile run in the country.

“Runners and spectators will in fact see a visible increase in police and emergency personnel presence along the entire course of the race,” he said. “And I also will tell  you up front that there are a number of other things that we’ll be doing that you won’t see.”

Nutter added that even with increased security, the Boston Marathon bombings will remain on everyone’s mind. He was referring to the two explosions at the finish line of the Boston Marathon that killed three and injured upward of 170 people.

He said the colorful stickers are a symbol.

“The entire nation was moved by the tragic events that we saw that day,” Nutter said. “And I know that Philadelphians – and especially our running community – want to share their love and support for our brothers and sisters and fellow Americans in Boston.”
