Police said on Wednesday that a man gunned down last night during a fatal double shooting in Kensington gave his life to save his girlfriend’s 11-year-old son.

Capt. James Clark of the Homicide Unit said Carmen Medina, 31, drove her Jeep SUV to the 200 block of East Gurney Street with her 11-year-old son, boyfriend Thomas Gorman, 39; and an unidentified female friend.

“She then got out of her vehicle and got into verbal conformation with an unknown male,” Clark said.

“At the end of the confrontation, she was trying to run away. She got back into her vehicle. This male came back at her, opened her drivers side door and shot her several times.”

He said the gunman next turned his fury on Medina’s son, who was sitting in the backseat.

“It appears that he pointed the gun at the 11-year-old, then the male decedent actually threw his body in front of him and he was unfortunately shot and killed,” Clark said.

Both Medina and Gorman died at the scene.

The child and the female passenger were uninjured. Clark said they’ve been helpful in providing detectives with information.

He said investigators have not determined what the argument was about, but did call the neighborhood “a heavy drug area.”

Police have also come up with a description of the suspect, believed to be a 6-foot-2 to 6-foot-3-inch tall black male with a heavy build, bald head and full beard.

He was last seen fleeing on foot east from the crime scene.

Clark said detectives are looking into whether the homicide is related to a double shooting March 3 on the 2800 block of Swanson Street, about a block away.

Two men were injured in that incident.

“We’ve been talking about a lot of the same players and trying to figure out if those jobs are linked together.” Clark said.

He said the captain of the 24th District has pumped extra resources into the area in an attempt to preempt any further acts of violence.

“It’s very sad,” he said.

“Like I said, we had two individuals who were killed. We could have had an 11-year-old killed, as well.”

As with all homicides, the city is offering a $20,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible.

Anyone with information is asked to call 911, or to submit an anonymous tip by dialing 215-686-TIPS (8477), texting PPD TIP (773847), emailing tips@phillypolice.com or by filling out this online form.
