Thousands expected at memorial service for MIT officer

MIT police officer Sean Collier, 26, was killed last Thursday.

Law enforcement officers from around the U.S. were expected to pay their respects to slain MIT police officer Sean Collier at a campus memorial service Wednesday.

Only MIT students and staff and law enforcement were invited to the ceremony at Briggs Field, which was scheduled to begin at noon. MIT canceled Wednesday’s classes in Collier’s honor.

Vice President Joe Biden was scheduled to speak at the service. Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick and U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren were also expected to attend.

Authorities said Collier, 26, was shot and killed by Boston Marathon bombing suspects Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev while patrolling the campus Thursday night. The older suspect was killed later that night; the other was captured by police Friday.

Collier’s funeral was held Tuesday. He had worked at MIT since January 2012 and was expected to join the Somerville Police Department this summer.

“We grieve with his family, his many friends and his fellow MIT police officers,” MIT President L. Rafael Reif wrote in a letter to the MIT community on Monday. “Many at MIT knew and loved Officer Sean Collier; for those who didn’t, he was someone we could all wish to have had the opportunity to know.”

Cambridge police closed several roads near the MIT campus, including the Massachusetts Avenue bridge and a section of Memorial Drive.
