Design Museum Boston challenge results in pretty sweet Street Seats in Fort Point

On Saturday, Fort Point was speckled with 17 unique seats in the hope of intriguing waterfront visitors and inspiring the public to think outside the box, or in this case, the bench.

The curious seats are the result of the Design Museum Boston’s “Street Seats Design Challenge,” which launched in September 2012 and attracted 172 entries from 26 states and 23 countries.

“A city is essentially a museum with exhibitions being out in the public,” said Sam Aquillano, co-founder and executive director of Design Museum Boston. “Fort Point Channel itself is a very big focal point in the Innovation District. We really wanted to engage the community and a broad number of designers.”

In February, the 17 best designs were selected based on their benches’ aesthetic quality, functionality and sustainability and designers got a grant to build the benches.

On Saturday, the three winners were selected:

Grand Prize ($5,000) : “Bowsprit,” was designed by a student team from Georgia Tech.

Runner-Up “LuminUS,” designed by a team from Dyer Brown Architects & Chapman Construction in Boston took home a $2,500, as did the team from Make Stuff Lab in Boston, which took home the People’s Choice for “Chroma.”

All 17 benches will remain in Fort Point until October 2013, at which point they will be relocated to the Boston Design Center.
