Supermarket mogul and mayoral candidate John Catsimatidis has released the first television ad of this year’s mayoral race, with the Joe Lhota campaign close on his heels.

The 60-second Catsimatidis spot began airing on NY1 and Fox News in New York City on Monday. The biographical ad touts Catsimatidis’ rags-to-riches story.

“John Catsimatidis grew up on 135th Street in Harlem; The son of immigrants – his dad was a bus boy,” the voice over says.

The video goes on to describe how the billionaire Griestedes owner worked his way through school and went on to build “one of America’s most successful private businesses.”

“Today, John Catsimatidis is running for mayor because he believes every New Yorker deserves the opportunities that he had,” the narrator says.

The 30-second Lhota ad, titled “Joe Is New York,” was launched on YouTube today and will hit cable news channels this Thursday.

It emphasizes the former MTA chief’s role during 9/11 and in efficiently getting the city’s transit system back on track so soon after Hurricane Sandy.

“In these uncertain times, only one candidate for Mayor has already proven he’s ready,” the narrator intones. “Joe Lhota is New York. And he’s ready to be our mayor.”
