Run Now: Boston-based social media push unites nation’s runners
Run Now, a social media campaign launched by Boston’s Brand Networks and the Competitor Group, has united a virtual community of runners from across the nation.
Thousands of people have pledged to run a collective 144,769 miles Wednesday, which is National Running Day, to honor the victims of the Boston Marathon terror attack. Massachusetts residents pledged to run 12,874 miles.
The campaign has also raised money for The One Fund Boston through the sale of blue-and-yellow “Run Now Boston” bracelets.
Brand Networks CEO Jamie Tedford said the social media project offered the running community solidarity in the wake of the bombings.
“No matter where you are, you can say, ‘I’m doing this. Just find a group, or do a run on your own. We wanted people to feel connected to a broader community without setting up thousands of runs across the country,” Tedford said.
Social media played a big role uniting people in the wake of the bombings, with people around the globe using Twitter and Facebook to organize fundraisers.
“It seems like with every major tragedy that happens in this country, social media is the connective tissue when other means of communication aren’t available,” Tedford said. “It shows the true power of social media.”
