A taxi driver was shot early Tuesday during an apparent robbery attempt in Philadelphia’s East Mount Airy section.

The shooting happened on the 200 block of East Hortter Street about 1:45 a.m., police said. The victim reportedly lost a lot of blood after he was shot once in his arm.

Police are looking for two black males, both about 30 years old, 5-foot-7 and 200 pounds, in connection with the robbery and shooting.

One of the suspects had a blond streak in his hair, according to police. The victim also told investigators one of the suspects is dark-skinned and the other has a medium complexion.

The Germantown Cab Co. driver picked up the two suspects at Germantown Avenue and Armat Street, on the border of the Penn-Knox and Wister neighborhoods.

When the victim stopped his taxi on the 200 block of East Hortter Street, one of the passengers exited the vehicle and approached the driver’s door. It was that man who forced the taxi driver back into the car after the remaining passenger had pulled out a gun, according to police.

The passenger shot the taxi driver in his arm from the back seat as he attempted to drive away. He and the second man then fled on foot.

Police followed the taxi driver to the former Germantown Hospital, which is now part of La Salle University and no longer has an emergency room, then transported him to Albert Einstein Medical Center for treatment. The victim  was last listed in serious but stable condition, police said.

Police do not believe the robbers were able to steal anything from the cab.
