When Boston University freshman arrive on campus for the fall semester, they’ll be educated about the hazards of binge drinking.

This summer, all incoming first-year students are required to take an online alcohol education course, AlcoholEdu for College, the university announced on its website.

According to the school, 35 percent of BU undergrads do not drink alcohol. But many of the students aren’t aware of these statistics, and administrators are hoping the online course will help dispel preexisting notions that all students drink.

BU students have had the option to review iHealth, another online course, in the past. But AlcoholEdu will give BU administrators a way to make sure all students get the information they need.

“It is used by most of our peer institutions as a prevention-level intervention for first-year college students” to curb dangerous drinking, Elizabeth Douglas, manager of wellness and prevention services at Student Health Services, told BU Today.  “We are using AlcoholEdu because it has the capacity to track student completion, in addition to having evidence of its being an effective intervention.”

A three-year study on 30 campuses showed that students who took the AlcoholEdu course  participated in significantly less binge drinking in the 30 days after taking the course.
