Grand jury charges former Philly police officer Richard DeCoatsworth
An indicting grand jury on Tuesday formally charged former Philadelphia police officer Richard DeCoatsworth with a litany of offenses for allegedly holding hostage two women he met at a party last month and forcing them at gunpoint to do drugs and perform sex acts.
DeCoatsworth is charged with rape, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, trafficking of persons, sexual assault, indecent assault, promoting prostitution, witness intimidation, possession with the intent to distribute, making terroristic threats, possession of an instrument of a crime, impersonating a public servant and possession of drug paraphernalia.
The onetime “hero cop” was in 2007 shot in the face and still managed to chase down the suspect, garnering him accolades and a seat next to the first lady during a speech from President Barack Obama.
DeCoatsworth continues to be held on $60 million bail.
The defendant’s bail reduction hearing originally scheduled for Monday was continued until June 24.
