Bicyclist impaled on Fairmount Park fence
Police are trying to determine how a bicyclist was impaled on a fence in Fairmount Park Thursday morning.
The bicyclist, believed to be in his 40s, was found with an inch-and-a-half pipe in his chest on Martin Luther King Drive, near Black Road, about 2 a.m.
It appears the bike slid on some pebbles and the bicyclist lost control, according to police.
Rescuers had to cut the metal fence pipe at the bicyclist’s chest, leaving a portion of the pipe in the man, before transporting him to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he remained in critical condition as of about 8:45 a.m.
