Former New England Patriots star Aaron Hernandez has been moved to a new jail cell in order to maintain his safety.

Hernandez, who is currently facing murder charges in the death of semiprofessional football player Odin Lloyd, was moved to a new 7-by-10-foot space in the Bristol County House of Corrections to protect him from other inmates.

“The reason for this move is simply to protect him,”  Sheriff Thomas Hodgson told WCVB on Monday. “We wouldn’t want some inmate trying to get any notoriety by attempting to harm Aaron Hernandez.”

Despite several reports, Hodgson says Hernandez is not in solitary confinement. He is in a single-bed cell and is allowed to leave it for three hours a day. Hodgson added that Aaron has been polite and adjusting well.

“For a man who has gone from 7,000 square feet to a small cell, he is doing very well and seems to be taking the situation great. He is very respectful and calm,” Hodgson said.

A new report obtained by the Wall Street Journal on Monday claims Hernandez was involved in another violent brawl back in 2007 while a student at the University of Florida.

According to the police report, a waitress brought Hernandez two “alcoholic drinks” at a bar called The Swamp in 2007. After consuming the beverages, Hernandez claimed he hadn’t ordered them and refused to pay the charges. Hernandez was told to leave and escorted out by Michael Taphorn, an employee at The Swamp.

The report states that Hernandez told police Taphorn “got in his face” and began yelling at him. As Taphorn turned to walk away, Hernandez punched him in the side of the head. Taphorn’s right eardrum ruptured as a result of the impact.

It was recommended that he be charged with felony assault, but police did not arrest Hernandez, who was only 17 years old at the time.
