A firefighter was hurt and two residents injured Sunday after a fire broke out at an Allston home that housed as many as 20 people.

About 100 firefighters responded to the blaze, which sent two residents and a firefighter to the hospital with minor injuries, including smoke inhalation.

The fire started around 7:12 a.m. at the three-story home located at 12 Mansfield St. and quickly spread to homes on both sides and one home in back of the fire. It caused over $1 million in damage, according to District Chief Gerald Hogan, who said all 20 residents, including one child, were displaced by the blaze.

Euzelia Souza lived on the second floor with six people and her 2-year-old daughter.

“My husband went out into the kitchen and we heard the smoke alarm. I grabbed my purse and my daughter and we started to see black smoke coming out and then I came down,” said Souza. “We were all sleeping so I don’t know what would have happened if my husband didn’t go out and hear the alarm,” she said, adding that residents left the house wearing only underwear and pajamas.

“These aren’t even my shoes. A neighbor came and gave them,” said Souza.

Fire officials were still investigating the cause of the fire as of deadline, but Hogan said it seemed to have started “in the rear.”

It was unclear whether an inspection by the city’s Inspectional Services Department found that the home violated occupancy limits. A Boston University student was killed in April during an early-morning fire that broke out in an Allston home that housed 18 people. That homeowner was cited for occupancy violations.
