New York City newsstands can now sell $10 merchandise
Newsstands in the city can now sell items up to $10, giving New Yorkers easy access to more expensive merchandise like umbrellas and batteries.
The maximum price a newsstand could charge for a single item was doubled from $5 after Mayor Michael Bloomberg signed a bill approving the increase Tuesday morning.
At a public hearing on local laws, Bloomberg thanked Department of Consumer Affairs staff and his own Office of City Legislative Affairs.
“I would also like to thank the City Council for approving this legislation,” he said.
When the City Council voted in the legislation, Speaker Christine Quinn noted that increase ensures items New Yorkers might need on-the-go, like cell phone chargers and earphones, are easily available on the street.
“Our legislation makes sure that the laws of our City remain current and ensures small business owners will continue to compete and succeed in New York City,” Quinn said in a statement.
“The $4 umbrella in 2002 isn’t the same as the $4 umbrella of 2012 or 2013,” she said. “The $4 umbrella in 2013? You’re lucky if it’s going to get you to the corner, keeping you dry.”
The maximum price was also increased from $2 to $5 in 2002.
