Delaware State Police cited a 22-year-old man early Wednesday morning for bicycling under the influence after he allegedly crashed into a fully marked patrol car in Rehoboth Beach.

Investigators said a trooper patrolling the area of Coastal Highway commonly referred to as the “forgotten mile” around 1:30 a.m. saw a bicyclist – later identified as Huseyin Engin Uysal – riding northbound without a headlight and weaving in and out of the travel lane while texting.

The trooper pulled ahead of Uysal, came to a stop onto the right shoulder of the road and activated the amber light bar on top of his patrol vehicle.

Police said he then got out of the car and walked around to its rear in an attempt to make contact with Uysal.

As the officer commanded Uysal to stop, he allegedly sped past and instead crashed into the rear of the cop car.

Uysal was launched over the bike’s handlebars and onto the road near the cruiser’s driver’s side door, according to authorities.

Investigators said the trooper rendered first aid to Uysal and helped him back onto the curb, where he found the man was uninjured.

The officer said he smelled alcohol as he spoke with Uysal, causing him to launch a DUI investigation.

Uysal was cited for bicycling under the influence of alcohol, failing to remain in a single lane and operating a bicycle not equipped with a light.

He was then released.
