Clark University student killed in Haiti

A student at Worcester’s Clark University was killed in a car accident in Haiti. Two other people affiliated with the school were also killed.

The Haiti Press Network reports that the crash happened on a highway in Fond des Negres, about 70 miles west of Port-au-Prince, WCVB writes.

Clark University President David Angel made an announcement on the school’s Facebook page Thursday, announcing the devastating news.

“I am writing to share with you some tragic news. Professor David Bell, Clark undergraduate student Amanda Mundt, and members of their families were in a car accident yesterday in Haiti. Professor Bell’s daughter Meagan, along with Amanda Mundt and her aunt, were killed in the accident. Professor Bell was seriously injured in the crash and is being transported to Boston for treatment. We will share more information as it becomes available. Our thoughts, prayers, and deepest condolences go out to their families and all those involved,” Angel wrote.

Mundt was from Amherst, and had been spending the year as an intern in Haiti, where she worked for the Institute for Justice and Democracy. She was planning on returning to Worcester in the fall to complete her senior year.

Mundt was also a noted member of the Clark field hockey team.

“Amanda Mundt was the quintessential Clark student-athlete – highly devoted to her studies, concerned with global issues, committed to thoughtful change, and passionate about her sport,” University Director of Athletics and Recreation, Sean Sullivan, said on the Clark Athletics website.  “She showed us all how any number of personal interests and talents could successfully coexist and we deeply admired her spirit, values and commitment to the betterment of others.”
