Authorities announced the arrests of five members of a Brooklyn-based prescription drug trafficking ring that distributed over $3.4 million in pills on Wednesday, July 17.

The investigation was lead by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration’s NYC Tactical Diversion, the NYPD and the Westchester County Department of Public Safety.

Sergey Plotits, the leader of the operation, set up medical offices in Sheepshead Bay and other parts of Brooklyn to illegally obtain and sell over 180,000 prescription pills, including 170,000 Oxycodone pills.

Zhanna Kanevsky, Rotislav Vilshteyn, Emil Shumunov and Alla Kuratova were also arrested for their involvement in the drug ring.

Kanevsky was a medical professional who allegedly wrote the illegal prescriptions, while the other defendants recruited fake patients to obtain addictive drugs, like Xanax and oxycodone.

“The conduct described in this indictment illustrates the scope of damage that can be caused when medical professionals seek to abuse and illegally profit from their licenses and positions,” State Health Commissioner Nirav Shah said.

All of the defendants are charged with fourth degree conspiracy charges.

Plotits, Vilshteyn and Kanevsky also are charged with selling prescription drugs as a controlled substance.
