A YouTube user uploaded a terrifying video last week of a giant water snake devouring a large fish whole in Cheltenham Township’s Tookany Creek just outside of Philadelphia.

The man, who maintains the blog Extreme Philly Fishing, wrote in the video’s description that he was using a bluegill as bait to fish for largemouth bass in the creek when the reptile, which he identified as a northern water snake, “popped out from under a rock and whacked my bluegill.”

“I was curious to see what the snake would do, and it eventually took the obvious course: It tried to eat the bluegill,” he wrote.

“It was pretty neat watching it eating the fish live, but not too neat after I realized that it would eventually eat my hook as well.”

The cameraman didn’t seem to think it was too neat at the time — when his hook catches the snake, he can be heard on tape repeatedly shouting, “That’s f–king bad news!” before the camera abruptly cuts off.

But the YouTube poster said after the film stopped rolling, he reeled the snake in and used pliers to unhook it from his rod.

Northern water snakes, which are common throughout North America, aren’t venomous, though their bites can sting.
