Rangel to run for re-election; ex-Gov. David Paterson mulls bid

A day after ex-Gov. David Paterson said he’s considering a bid for Rep. Charles Rangel’s seat in 2014, the incumbent congressman said he is running for re-election, at least for now.

“At this time I intend to run for re-election,” Rangel, the longtime congressman representing parts of Upper Manhattan and the western Bronx, told the New York Daily News.

The somewhat lukewarm statement comes just a day after the Associated Press reported Paterson would consider a bid for the seat if Rangel retires.

“I’m definitely looking at it,” said Paterson, who became governor in 2008 when Eliot Spitzer resigned after being linked to a prostitution scandal.

For his part, Rangel said he would know for sure whether he would run “around October” depending on “what the community decides.”

Rangel, 83, has represented the area in Congress for more than 40 years. If elected next year, Paterson would be 60, and told the Associated Press someone younger might be better suited for the position.

“I’m looking to see if someone will come forward to really speak for a changing and diverse community that is the congressional district,” Paterson said. “But I just find that the types of people I emulated when I was going around and served just aren’t around anymore. Everyone is a dealmaker. And that is what doesn’t close off my interest.”
