Swarthmore, Penn rank highly on best US colleges list
The University of Pennsylvania is the 11th best college in the United States, according to one magazine’s rankings.
Swarthmore College is Forbes magazine’s most highly rated college in the Philadelphia area though, coming in at sixth.
Forbes’ 2013 list has Stanford University as the nation’s top school, followed by Pomona College — a small school located about 30 miles from Los Angeles.
Princeton University is rated third, followed by Yale, Columbia, Swarthmore, the United States Military Academy at West Point, Harvard, Williams College and MIT to round out the Top 10.
The average annual tuition of the Top 10 schools (West Point is free for cadets) is $58,161 per year.
A total of 10 Pennsylvania schools made Forbes’ top 100 colleges list. In addition to Penn and Swarthmore, Bryn Mawr is ranked 40th; Carnegie Mellon, 42nd; Haverford, 43rd; Lafayette, 48th; Lehigh, 70th; Villanova, 79th; Franklin and Marshall, 86th; and Penn State, 93rd.
