SEPTA will close its Center City trolley tunnel between 10 p.m. Aug. 2 and 12:01 a.m. Aug. 12 in order to complete upgrades.

The work, which will include wire, track and station improvement projects in the tunnel, will impact trolley routes 11, 13, 34 and 36.

Affected commuters can use the Market-Frankford Line for travel to and from Center City.

Shuttle buses being used in place of route 10 trolleys for the Lancaster Avenue track renewal project will travel to and from 40th and Filbert streets during the tunnel project, instead of 33rd and Market streets. Passengers can transfer to the Market-Frankford Line at 40th and Market streets.

Trolley service will begin and end at 40th and Market streets during the project.

“We use the tunnel almost 24 hours a day, which means we have very limited opportunities to obtain track outages for extensive repair work,” said SEPTA Deputy General Manager Jeff Knueppel in a statement. “We are taking advantage of this time to complete several projects that will improve our trolley service through the tunnel.”

The major portion of the work to be completed over the nine-plus days entails replacing approximately 10,000 feet of worn overhead wire and 2,500 feet of ceiling trough.
