Philadelphia police shot a man multiple times early Sunday morning after they say he pointed a gun at an officer several times during a foot chase in Overbrook.

Uniformed officers from the 19th District shortly before 2:20 a.m. responded to a radio call reporting a fight on the 5500 block of Lansdowne Avenue.

There, they saw a 22-year-old man standing in the vestibule of an apartment and “acting suspicious,” according to an investigators.

Police said two officers asked the man to show them his hands and to lift his t-shirt, but the suspect merely shook his shirt instead of raising it.

As the officers began to get out of their car, the man allegedly fled west on Lansdowne toward 56th Street while clutching his waistband.

One of the officers gave chase on foot.

During the pursuit, the officer allegedly saw the man turn toward him while holding a revolver in his hand.

Authorities said the officer drew his weapon and discharged a set of rounds at the suspect as he continued to flee.

The suspect then allegedly turned back to face the officer a second time, still holding the weapon in his hand.

Police said the officer again opened fire on the man as he continued to run.

The officer grabbed the suspect as he turned the corner north onto 57th Street, causing the man to again turn to face the officer, still holding the weapon in his hand, according to investigators.

Authorities said the officer then fired a third set of rounds at the man, striking him multiple times and causing him to fall to the ground and drop the gun.

Police said investigators recovered from the scene a Taurus .357 revolver loaded with seven live rounds.

The suspect was taken into custody and rushed to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

While at the hospital, officials allegedly discovered in the man’s waistband a second firearm, which police identified as a Smith & Wesson .38-caliber revolver loaded with five live rounds.

The officer involved in the shooting sustained an abrasion to his left hand.

That officer will be placed on administrative duty as the case is reviewed by the District Attorney’s Office, according to police.

Authorities said all information released in regards to the shooting is preliminary and an investigation into the incident is very much ongoing.
