Scott Stringer campaign releases ad ripping Eliot Spitzer’s record

Taking the race for city comptroller up a notch, Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer’s campaign released a web ad slamming ex-Gov. Eliot Spitzer’s record before he resigned.

“You know how it ended,” the ad begins, showing a video of Spitzer announcing his resignation after being linked to a prostitution ring in 2008.

“Here’s how it began,” the ad continues, quoting various news articles, one saying the governor “plunged Albany into ‘political gridlock.’”

The ad, “Colossal Failure,” features the so-called “Troopergate,” when Spitzer was accused of using state police to spy on political enemies. The ad ends with a voiceover asking, “Why would we ever go back to that?”

In a statement on the ad, Stringer spokeswoman Audrey Gelman noted Spitzer ran on a “platform of ethics.”

“Instead, as governor he alienated allies and persecuted opponents, leaving the Capitol more dysfunctional than ever,” Gelman said. “All before his administration collapsed under the weight of scandal.”

A Spitzer campaign spokesman told The New York Post that it was “filled with mischaracterizations.”

Spokesman Hari Sevugan added that it was “another sign that the establishment is getting nervous that an independent voice fighting for the people’s interest will soon be in the comptroller’s office.”
