UPDATE: The Discovery Channel has confirmed that the shark hitching a ride on the N train wasn’t part of a promotion for the mega-popular Shark Week that ended Sunday.

“Shark Week is all about conservation, so it deeply saddens us that someone would think that this was funny or in any way connected to our celebration of sharks,” wrote Laurie Goldberg, executive vice president of PR for the Discovery Channel, in an email to Metro.

Metro’s original story is below.

A dead shark was found on a subway train early Wednesday morning, according to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

As first reported by Gothamist, around 12:30 a.m. at Queensboro Plaza, a conductor aboard a Queens-bound N train reported that there was a shark aboard one of the cars.

After the conductor isolated the car, the train continued to Ditmars Boulevard, according to MTA spokesman Kevin Ortiz.

“Upon arrival at Ditmars Boulevard, a train service supervisor reported the shark was dead and he placed it in a garbage bag and disposed of it in the trash,” Ortiz said in an email.

The road car inspector on duty returned the train car to service.

“Frankly by now it’s kind of jumped the… well, you know,” another MTA spokesperson added.

Mary M. boarded the train 34th Street after midnight and found the creature under the seats, she told Gothamist.

“I board a car that’s not terribly full and as soon as I enter, a stench hits my nose. It’s not the typical urine/trash smell, it’s… fishy?” Mary wrote to the blog.

“I think I stood there for a good minute just staring, thinking, ‘Is this for real?! Oh come ON, NYC!’”
