For the first time since launching 18 months ago, Hollaback! Boston is hosting a survey to gather data about street harassment in the city.

The organization, which is dedicated to eradicating street harassment, launched the two-minute State of the Streets survey on its website last week.

Since then, about 170 people have responded, and according to Britni de la Cretaz, a founding member of Hollaback! Boston, hundreds more are expected to weigh in.

“We are at the point where we’ve been around long enough, and want to make some changes and get in contact with policy makers, but we need numbers and evidence to show that [street harassment] is happening in Boston,” she said.

Questions range from the basics, like age, gender, race, and neighborhood, to more specific queries about types of street harassment and their emotional impact.

One question asks,”What do you consider street harassment and/or harassment in public space?” Another asks if the respondent has ever intervened while witnessing someone else being harassed.

The survey is open to people of all ages and genders, she said. It will remain open on boston.ihollaback.org until Aug. 31.

  1. It is good that they are getting public opion on this matter. There are way too many people who were either a witness or victim of being harassed by fellow traveller on the MBTA. It’s really disturbing.
