JFK customs agents sick after opening package of beauty supplies
Two customs agents became sick after opening a package of beauty supplies at a JFK Airport postal facility Sunday morning, officials said.
While field tests initially showed nerve gas in the package, a FDNY spokesman said the workers were exposed to organic phosphate around 9:30 a.m. They were taken to Franklin General Hospital in Long Island several hours later at 2 p.m.
An FBI spokesman said the agency was called in to investigate the package “out of an abundance of caution.” The postal facility was closed for several hours but after screening the package and workers, the facility was reopened late Sunday afternoon.
The workers are in stable condition, the FDNY said.
