With black voters hoisting him up, former Governor Eliot Spitzer is leading with more than 50 percent of likely Democratic primary voters in the City Comptroller race.

Of 579 likely primary voters, Spitzer leads Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer 56 to 37 percent, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released Wednesday.

While the survey showed no gender gap, Spitzer’s lead is boosted by black voters, with 68 percent of those polled choosing him over Stringer.

“Everyone seems to be against former Gov. Eliot Spitzer except the voters, especially black voters,” Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute, said in a statement.

On the other hand, Stringer leads with 53 percent of the white vote.

Five years before leaping into the City Comptroller race in July, Spitzer resigned as governor when he was implicated in a prostitution scandal.

Of white voters, 29 percent said Spitzer’s past behavior disqualified him. Only 13 percent of black voters said the same.

Stringer voters were more steadfast in their choice, with 74 percent saying they will definitely vote for him. Four weeks until the primary, 68 percent of Spitzer voters said they would definitely vote for him.

The new poll was conducted from Aug. 7 to 12 and might not reflect any changed opinions after two heated debates between Stringer and Spitzer, on Aug. 9 and 12.

The poll had a margin of error plus or minus 4.1 percent.
