A masked robber hijacked an armored car in Brooklyn on Thursday and got away with as much as $500,000.

The suspect struck at about 11:20 a.m. when he targeted the driver of a Rapid Armored Car as he sat in the parking lot of a shopping center on Seaview Avenue in Canarsie, The New York Daily News reports.

When the robber knocked on the van, the driver mistakenly opened the door thinking it was his partner, police said. The bandit then stuck a hard object behind the driver’s head and told him to drive.

Ordering him to pull over about two miles away on Rockaway Avenue and Linden Boulevard, the thief grabbed a white duffel bag with $500,000 and ran off.

The driver said he never saw a gun, but believed the man could have been armed. No one was injured.

Police combed the area following the heist, but could not locate the suspect.

Detectives questioned the driver, who described the robber as being in his 20s and wearing all black.

Police have not ruled out the possibility of an inside job, the News reports.
