Hailing it as a victory for the revitalized Queens neighborhood, city officials unveiled the new Hunter’s Point South Waterfront Park on Wednesday.

The 5.5-acre park utilizes a previously abandoned post-industrial area and includes a large lawn, a playground, a 13,000-square-foot pavilion and a waterfront promenade.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said that opening up more waterfront space to the public was a priority of his administration.

“Around the city, we’ve reclaimed abandoned or neglected parts of our waterfront, turning them into innovative open spaces,” Bloomberg said in a statement.

The park is part of the city’s effort to develop Hunter’s Point South as a new mixed-use neighborhood with affordable housing, shopping and a new public school.

The multiphase Hunter’s Point South project will include the largest new affordable housing complex in the city since the 1970s.

“Hunter’s Point South is poised to become a vibrant middle-class neighborhood and a destination for New Yorkers and visitors alike,” said Kyle Kimball, president of the city’s Economic Development Corporation, which led construction of the park, in a statement.

The park was primarily financed by the city’s Department of Housing Preservation and Development. The park, along with new roadways and infrastructure at the same site, cost $66 million.

The park, which also features an adult fitness area, a dog run and a small beach, will be maintained by the Department of Parks & Recreation.

Solar panels on the park’s pavilion will provide more than 50 percent of its energy. The park was also designed to resist flooding.
