(UPDATE) BilldeBliar.com: Bill Thompson campaign launches attack website

BilldeBliar.com, an attack website against Bill de Blasio, was launched by the Bill Thompson campaign today.

UPDATE: De Blasio spokesman Dan Levitan sent out a statement responding to the website.

“This is a desperate and silly attack from a campaign with no ideas and no vision for how to break from the Bloomberg years,” Levitan said. “They do get points for chutzpah though, since Bill Thompson worked as a Wall Street lobbyist as recently as this year.”

Metro’s original story is below.

The Bill Thompson campaign launched an attack website against Bill de Blasio today, www.BilldeBliar.com.

The website is piggybacking on recent reports that de Blasio did not disclose several meetings he had with lobbyists as Public Advocate, despite promising to hold himself to a higher standard of transparency.

His Public Advocate office claimed the meetings were not disclosed because they were initiated by de Blasio rather than by the lobbyists.

The report by the New York Daily News claimed a tally of 47 undisclosed meetings over the span of three years, with at least 10 of the lobbyists donating more than $10,000 total to his mayoral campaign.

Thompson spokesman John Collins called de Blasio’s claim that those meeting didn’t qualify as lobbyist meetings “clever.”

When asked whether Thompson would disclose such meetings, Collins said de Blasio is “the one who came out and said I want to hold myself to a higher standard.”

Councilman Lew Fidler expressed disdain for de Blasio’s claim that the meetings with lobbyists were not lobbyist meetings.

“I guess that depends on what the definition of ‘is’ is,” Fidler said dryly.

Fidler also mentioned de Blasio’s son Dante, whose hair has become a significant element of the de Blasio campaign, with the campaign recently push a #GoWithTheFro theme on Facebook and Twitter.

“It’s great that his son’s got a cute afro, we love that,” Fidler said. “But I don’t think we want to be cute with the truth.”

“The first test of any candidate for mayor is that they can be truthful,” Fidler added, and said de Blasio’s claim “suggests that the candidate thinks that people are stupid or not paying attention.”

“I don’t agree with that,” Fidler said.

Fidler also called out de Blasio’s push for a tax on people who earn a million or more, to be used to pay for full-day universal pre-K. Fidler said that in a 2010 meeting with the Association for a Better New York, de Blasio “said taxing Wall Street would be insane and he promised no new taxes.”

“Will the real Bill de Blasio please stand up?” Fidler demanded.

He warned voters that if de Blasio is elected, he will “flipflop” again, becoming more moderate and less of the idealist he has been known as on the campaign trail.

“You watch him scamper back to the middle,” Fidler predicted.

Christine Quinn’s campaign has been keeping their own de Blasio fact-checking Tumblr, Tale of Two de Blasios, riffing on de Blasio’s “Tale of Two Cities” slogan.
