Bloomberg says he won’t endorse in mayor’s race

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said that he decided not to make an endorsement in the race to replace him.

“I don’t want to do anything that complicates it for the next mayor and that’s one of the reasons I’ve decided I’m just not going to make an endorsement in the race,” he said in his weekly appearance on “The John Gambling Show” Friday.

While Bloomberg said this decision jibes with his desire to focus on running the city, some political pundits have suggested the mayor feels his endorsement could hurt rather than help his choice, whoever that may be.

Of registered voters, 46 percent approve of Bloomberg’s job performance, but 33 percent believe he’s only doing a fair job and another 19 percent say he is performing poorly, according to NBC 4 New York/Wall Street Journal/Marist Poll.

Still, Bloomberg insisted he’s focusing only on ensuring a “world-class transition” to the next administration.

“Helping the next mayor get prepared for the job so that they can hit the ground running is really one of the most important things that I can do for New Yorkers after November,” Bloomberg said.

He added that he’s never played party politics and doesn’t intend on breaking that in his last days in office.

“My job’s to govern and to help the next guy,” Bloomberg concluded.
