One of Vice President Joe Biden’s nieces was taken into police custody in New York City on Tuesday morning, a law enforcement source reported.

Caroline Biden, 26, is the daughter of the vice president’s brother, James Biden Sr.

Police were called to her Desbrosses Street apartment in TriBeCa about 7:58 a.m. Tuesday morning because of an argument with her roommate. Police said the argument was relatively low-key until a female cop stepped between Biden and her roommate, and Biden took a swing at the cop.

She was immediately taken into custody without any trouble, police said, but was “highly uncooperative” and refused to speak with police at the 1st precinct stationhouse.

The young woman was taken in on charges of assaulting a police officer, the law enforcement source said. She was formally charged with obstructing government administration, resisting arrest and harassment. She was arraigned in Manhattan Criminal Court early Tuesday afternoon.

Police believe the fight had to do with Biden not paying rent.

Biden has had trouble with law enforcement before. In May 2009, the AP reported that the vice president’s niece was detained by Amtrak police reportedly because of a “misunderstanding over a train fare.” Biden, then a student at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., was not arrested or charged. She reportedly did not tell police at that time that she was related to the vice president.
