Republican mayoral candidate Joe Lhota will meet with the Rev. Al Sharpton during a private talk at the National Action headquarters on Tuesday night.

While Sharpton has not made an outright endorsement in the race for mayor, he has hosted several Democratic candidates at his organization in the months leading up to last week’s primary.

Over the weekend, Sharpton declared Public Advocate Bill de Blasio the “presumptive nominee” for Democrats, though former City Comptroller Bill Thompson had not yet conceded in the race.

Speaking at his organization, Sharpton said that identity politics had ended and given way to an “identity politics of policy.”

Sharpton said at the meeting that the city can’t accept the status quo.

“Now it is time for a series of meaningful, forceful changes in this city to address people’s suffering,” he said.

Though de Blasio has campaigned on being the candidate to bring “progressive” change to the city, Lhota said Monday that de Blasio’s change was “radical.”

“My change is practical. It’s straightforward. It’s to be able to build on what we have done, not tear down what has happened,” Lhota said.

Sharpton and Lhota will address reporters following the meeting.
