City Councilor John Connolly leads the pack of a dozen candidates vying for position in the Boston mayor’s race, but 19 percent of voters are still undecided, according to a new poll.

The Suffolk University/Boston Herald poll results released on Wednesday put Connolly in first with 16 percent. State Rep. Marty Walsh and Suffolk District Attorney Dan Conley are tired in second with 12 percent.

Calculations were made based on the answers of 600 voters likely to participate in next week’s preliminary election. The margin of error is 4 percent.

Tuesday’s preliminary election will narrow the field to the top two vote earners who will face off in a campaign until the November election.

Mayor Thomas Menino announced earlier this year that he will not seek another term after 20 years in office.
