Police are investigating a double shooting early Sunday morning in Frankford that resulted in an officer opening fire on the suspect four times during an ensuing pursuit.

Investigators said a uniformed 15th District officer shortly before 3:30 a.m. responded to a report of a shooting on the 2000 block of Margaret Street.

There, a 22-year-old man involved in an argument allegedly shot his ex-girlfriend, 20, in the face and the woman’s brother, 21, in the stomach.

Both victims were taken to Hahnemann University Hospital, where they were listed in critical condition.

The officer soon saw a suspect fitting the alleged gunman’s description on the 4600 block of Paul Street, according to investigators.

Police said the officer got out of his patrol car and ordered the man to stop and put his hands up.

The suspect instead allegedly fled to the 4600 block of Frankford Avenue, where authorities said he drew a revolver from his waistband area and pointed the weapon at the officer, causing the officer to draw his service weapon and open fire.

Police said the suspect continued to flee, running east on Margaret Street, where he again allegedly turned and pointed the gun in the officer’s direction, prompting the officer to shoot at him a second time.

Investigators said the suspect kept running, reaching an open lot.

There, he allegedly turned toward the officer with the gun in his hand for a third time.

Police said the officer again opened fire on the man, causing him to drop his weapon and fall over a wall.

But the man allegedly continued to keep running, fleeing onto Salem Street and running west into an alley, then north into another alley.

There, he stopped, and the officer ordered him to put his hands up and turn around.

But, according to investigators, as the officer put his gun back into the holster to retrieve his handcuffs, the suspect tried to punch him and the two began to wrestle.

As the officer struggled with the suspect, the man allegedly tried to gain control of the officer’s firearm.

The officer then fired at the man for a fourth time, this time shooting him in the back.

The suspect was taken to Hahnemann University Hospital in critical condition.

Police said his revolver containing four spent casings was recovered from the open lot.

The shooting is currently being investigated by the Internal Affairs Unit and will then be reviewed by the District Attorney’s Office.

The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative duty pending the investigation’s outcome.
