After seven years leading the Boston Police Department, Commissioner Ed Davis plans to announce his resignation on Monday.

Boston police have scheduled a news conference for Monday morning and said Davis will discuss his “future plans.” A department spokeswoman said there was no more information being released.

Davis was praised in a statement from Mayor Thomas Menino’s office on Sunday. The statement indicated that Menino would let his successor pick the next commissioner.

“Mayor Thomas M. Menino thanks Commissioner Davis for his tremendous work over the past seven years. The Mayor will work with him to make sure there is a smooth transition as a new mayor comes into office to find their own permanent police commissioner,” the mayor’s office statement said.

While the reason or timing for his resignation were not disclosed, the Globe reported that Davis is stepping aside to pursue other plans that haven’t been finalized. He will also teach part-time at Harvard.

Davis was named commissioner in 2006. Before that he lead the Lowell Police Department.

Davis was propelled into the national spotlight this year because of the Boston Marathon bombings. After the bombings he testified before Congress during a hearing examining how the attacks were able to take place.
