Councilman requests Build It Back extension for Sandy victims

Brooklyn Councilman Domenic Recchia, Jr. is pushing for the Mayor’s Office of Housing Recovery Operations to extend the deadline for the Build It Back program.

The deadline to apply to the program, which provides recovery assistance to New Yorkers whose homes and businesses were structurally damaged by last year’s Superstorm Sandy, is currently Sept. 30.

Recchia, concerned that the number of people registered for assistance is significantly lower than the number of homes and other buildings damaged by the storm, is pushing to extend it to Nov. 30.

“Extending the deadline would go a long way in closing this gap and ensuring that New Yorkers have the opportunity to access much-needed assistance,” Recchia urged in a letter to Director Brad Gair.

Recchia noted recent findings of widespread “confusion and misunderstandings as to the nature of the Build It Back program and the application process and requirements.”

“Keeping Build It Back open for an additional period of time will allow the City to address these concerns,” Recchia wrote. Recchia also expressed hope that prolonging the deadline through the storm’s one-year anniversary will boost registration “by taking advantage of the widespread media coverage that will likely occur over the first anniversary of the storm.”
