NYC voters, even drivers, want bike lanes and pedestrian islands

The mayor’s race could come down to transit safety.

More than two-thirds of general election voters said they support “bringing protected bike lanes and pedestrian islands” to their neighborhoods, according to a poll released Monday.

Sixty-seven percent of likely voters — and 65 percent of voters with cars — said they support the transit safety measures, research firm Penn Schoen Berland and advocacy group Transportation Alternatives found.

One in three voters polled has either been seriously injured in a traffic accident or knows someone who was involved in a serious crash.

“Traffic safety is personal for so many New Yorkers, and voters are telling the next mayor that he needs to take specific steps to save life and limb on our roads,” Paul Steely White, executive director of Transportation Alternatives, said in a statement.

Support for the protected lanes and islands can be found in all boroughs, the poll found.

Part of Democratic candidate Bill de Blasio’s transportation plan includes creating more bike lanes as well as eliminating traffic fatalities.

Republican candidate Joe Lhota does not have comprehensive transit safety plan but said the city should focus on improving the flow of vehicles, maintaining the good condition of city streets and improving pedestrian safety.

The poll’s margin of error is plus or minus 3.31 percent.
