Brooklyn Councilwoman Letitia “Tish” James defeated state Sen. Daniel Squadron in the Democratic runoff election Tuesday, securing the party’s nomination in the Public Advocate’s race.

James won 59.4 percent of the vote, to Squadron’s 40.6 percent, according to unofficial returns.

As was anticipated, a few New Yorkers ultimately decided the race, with just over 111,000 votes cast for the councilwoman and about 76,000 votes for the senator.

Despite the low turnout, the runoff was pricey at $13 million, prompting calls to reform New York’s electoral system. The annual budget for the public advocate’s office is about $2.3 million.

Squadron congratulated James in a statement.

“She’ll be a great advocate for New Yorkers across our city,” the senator said.

Tearing up at an election party, James acknowledged the historic nature of her bid, repeating, “We did it!”

If ultimately elected in November, James will be the first African-American woman elected to citywide office. With no Republican opponent, she is expected to easily win the office, currently held by Democratic mayoral nominee Bill de Blasio.
