Police on Friday announced an arrest in connection with a shooting Sept. 26 in South Philadelphia that took the life of a 22-year-old man.

Tyreek McNeil, 21, of the 600 block of Mifflin Street was taken into custody Sept. 28.

He is being charged in connection with the homicide of Jose Gabino Aparicio, 22, of the 1800 block of South Rosewood Street.

Police said Aparicio was shortly before 4:15 a.m. riding his bike with a friend on the 800 block of Watkins Street when a man, also on a bicycle, approached Aparicio and demanded he give up his backpack.

Aparicio struggled with the assailant over the bag and was shot multiple times, according to investigators.

He died shortly before 4:40 a.m. at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.

McNeil was arraigned shortly before 12:40 p.m. Sept. 29.

He is charged with two counts each of robbery with the infliction of serious bodily injury, theft by unlawful taking and receiving stolen property; as well as one count each of murder, simple assault, possession of an instrument of crime with intent, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, carrying a firearm without a license and carrying a firearm in public in Philadelphia.

He is jailed at the Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility, where he is being held without bail.

McNeil is next due in court Oct. 16 for a preliminary hearing.
