David Petraeus, former director of the CIA and Army general, will become a non-resident senior fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs.

The Harvard Crimson reports that Petraeus will helm a project at the Belfer Center called “The Coming North America Decades.” The project will study scientific, economic and technological factors that have contributed to North American competitiveness and analyze the potential effects of policy options on American interests.

The Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs is a research center within Harvard Kennedy School, and has a number of resident and non-resident fellows who stay for varying periods for research or projects, according to James Smith, the center’s director of communications.

Fellow HKS professor Graham Allison commented on the appointment.

“We count ourselves fortunate,” Allison said, “to have David Petraeus making a major intellectual investment in issues so central to a center whose mission is to advance policy-relevant knowledge about the most significant international challenges.

“He has an inquiring mind, strategic orientation, intellectual fearlessness and appreciation of the academy that will make this a productive partnership.”

Petraeus resigned from the CIA in 2012 following the scandal of his affair with biographer Paula Broadwell.

The release did not state when he will begin his work at Harvard.
