In the wake of the Boston Marathon bombing that killed three and wounded hundreds, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said officials will take extra safety precautions for the ING NYC Marathon this Sunday.

“The police department will have lots of security and most of it you won’t see,” Bloomberg said at an unrelated press conference Tuesday.

The mayor said that the city will go into the marathon with two assumptions, the first being that “nothing bad will happen” during the 26.2-mile race from Staten Island to Central Park.

“And, number two, that we’re ready if, God forbid, something does. We’re taking every possible step to prevent it,” he said.

He urged New Yorkers to call 911 or 311 if they see any suspicious or strange activity. About 48,000 people are expected to run in the race, organized by the New York Road Runners.

Bloomberg said the city was “not unmindful” of the Boston bombings.

“Although I’ll say we’ve had an awful lot of security out there in every one of the years that I’ve been following the marathon,” he said.

The mayor, noting fair weather predictions, was confident the race would go off without a hitch.

“I’m optimistic that this is going to be a great marathon,” he said.
